Buying Bulk Computer Printer InkBuying bulk computer printer ink cartridges and refill kits will save you money. Simple enough, but how do you find the best deal? How do you know you’re saving money without compromising quality when buying bulk computer printer ink? Manufacturer Filled Cartridges Pros: Discounts usually exist for 4 or more cartridges of one type. If you have both a color and a black cartridge, bulk buy the one you use most (for document printers it’ll be black; for photo printers it’ll be color.) If they are first-filled cartridges from the manufacturer, you’ll get a better quality ink that will last longer. Cons: This is the most expensive bulk-buying computer ink option, but it’ll still save you plenty of money. They do dry out, even as they sit in the packages, but the packaging is higher quality so they won’t dry as fast as refills. Shipping is usually higher for these than the same number of refilled cartridges. Remanufactured (Refilled) Cartridges Pros: If you don’t want the hassle and mess of refilling your ink cartridges, consider buying the cartridges, already filled with ink, in bulk. Many of these are recycled cartridges, passing on the savings of refilling, without the mess, to you. These are available in color and black ink for Canon, Epson, Lexmark and Hewlett Packard printers. Other brands may vary in availability and reliability. Cons: Shelf life of ink once it’s in the cartridge is less than ink in the bottle. While you definitely don’t want to unwrap a cartridge until you’re ready to install it, it’s drying out in the cellophane wrap. These are more expensive than the kits to refill cartridges yourself. Do-It-Yourself Refill Kits Pros: Cheap, cheap, cheap. A bottle of ink will refill your cartridges many times. Almost no evaporation or absorption to worry about – the plastic bottles won’t allow the ink to evaporate or be absorbed. Cons: You’ll have to refill more often. Many of the printer cartridges, especially low-cost models, require special tools to refill – or can’t be refilled at all. The mess can be a big drawback, especially for a not-so-handy person. Cost Comparison Let’s compare the cost savings based on each of the bulk buying options above. An HP inkjet in the v40 series black cartridge costs about $30 if purchased alone in a discount store. The same cartridge can be purchased from a wholesaler, still in manufacturer wrapping, at a rate of $100 / 4 + $8 shipping and handling. Cost per cartridge = $27. A remanufactured cartridge for that printer is $21 (with shipping) for one or $92.50 + $5 shipping for 5 cartridges. Cost per cartridge = $19.50 One bottle of black ink for the cartridge (requires no additional tools) is $10 + $4 shipping and can refill the cartridge 4 times. Cost per cartridge = $3.50. Buying bulk computer printer ink does save you money. Not just pennies and dimes – real dollars. It’s almost as if you are printing your own money.
